Public Transport

You can take a direct train from Vienna to Hallstatt. The fastest trains from Vienna to Hallstatt take around 3 hours and 12 minutes, covering a distance of approximately 212 kilometres.

On weekdays, the first train leaving Vienna is scheduled to depart at around 08:27. The last departure is usually at around 10:10. This is the same at the weekend. On average, there are about 4 trains per day travelling between the two cities. They leave approximately every 5 minutes.

Self Driving

If you are on a road trip, you can drive to Hallstatt from Vienna. The ride is about 3.5 hours, and parking is not a hastle if you arrive early. However, you can't drive to the city center, so you will have to leave the car in a parking lot right outside the old town - but don't worry, you won't need a car once you are in the town center. As you approach Hallstatt, you will see parking signs that will direct you to the parking lot.

    Hallstatt is indeed a fairytale, but would definitely recommend staying overnight so you can enjoy the island all to yourself before and after the tourists crowds leave!
